 Frequently
Asked Questions
What is an umbrella species?
An umbrella species is one that utilizes
large natural areas of habitat containing many different kinds of plant
and animal species. This means that protecting Florida black bear
habitat means protection for the many other animals and plants that live
in the same areas that bears do.
Are Florida black bears endangered?
The Florida black bear is not listed on
the federal Endangered Species Act, but it is protected as a threatened
animal by the state of Florida.
How many bears could live in Florida?
No one knows for sure. We believe that
there are approximately 2,500 - 3,000 bears in Florida today. Biologists
continue to study bear populations to get a better estimate of the
total.
How are Florida black bears different
than the American black bear?
You cannot tell the difference just by
looking at both bears. There are very subtle differences, for example
the Florida black bears skull is slightly longer. The differences show
up in DNA tests.
Are Florida black bears only found in
Florida?
Florida black bears are also found in
southern Georgia and Alabama.
