Alternative to Purse-Seining

There are ways to catch tuna without harming dolphins. Mature yellowfin tuna can also be found apart from both dolphins and other "by-catch" (organisms other than tuna caught in the nets) such as sea turtles. Fishers can use fish aggregating devices, or "FADs," in the open ocean, where dolphins aren't found. Tuna like to swim under the FAD for the same reasons they like to swim under dolphins. Fishers can then set their nets around the FAD to catch the tuna below, without harming dolphins. Fishers in the western Pacific Ocean, as opposed to the eastern Pacific Ocean, use FADs instead of dolphins to find and catch tuna.
